Routes 4 & 4A
The 4 is a relatively new route, starting in 2006 between Ballymun and Blackrock (though initially it only went as far as St. Vincent's Hospital). In November 2007 it was augmented with the 4A which ran from Harristown to Stradbrook Road. Due to the near straightness of the route it became the final home of the AW-Class, after a number of years being tested on different routes. However, as part of Network Direct Phase 1, the 4 and 4A were merged into a new 4 which ran from Harristown to Monkstown Avenue. The last day of both routes was the 18th September 2010 and a trip was undertaken on the 4A on the 15th September 2010. An AW on the 4 was taken out to Harristown and then AW 18 on the 4A was travelled on to Stradbrook. Just shy of its third birthday, the 4A was gone, and the AWs themselves only lasted a few more months before the route went over to double-decker operation.
