Two journeys undertaken on the 47 on 1st November 2008 and 3rd September 2013
In 2008 the number 47 made a return to the Dublin Bus network, 9 years after it was retired, but this was a very different 47. The original 47 had more in common with the current (in 2013) 61 and 161 than its 2008 successor. Originally the route ran from Donnybrook Church to Sandyford and on to Belarmine, providing a connection with this new housing development in Stepaside and the Luas tram line at Sandyford. By 2010, the route had been extended through Ballsbridge to terminate in Pearse Street. In 2012, it was part of the Network Direct changes and moved through Sandymount and Ringsend to terminate in Fleet Street, being a part replacement for routes 2 and 3.
In November 2008 I undertook a short trip on this new route from Sandyford to Stepaside on board AV 256. In 2013, after doing the 61 and 161, I thought thematically it would be fitting to travel on the route again, and on a very sunny 3rd September I boarded AX 468 on the first departure from Fleet Street and travelled all the way out to Belarmine, before making my way back in along the route to photograph it. I even managed a shot along the off-peak routing through Mount Merrion where the scenery is stunning.
Interestingly, while the route passes right outside Ringsend Garage, it is operated by Donnybrook. With so many changes to it over the last five years, one wonders what the next five have in order for it.
