A journey undertaken on Dublin Bus route 49 on the 22nd May 2014.
It has taken a while but at last Off The Beaten Tracks has covered a route to Tallaght, one of the largest suburbs in Dublin and one heavily served by buses. However, instead of taking the more obvious 27 or 77A, the 49 was chosen as it is a bit more novel. The route is operated by Ringsend Garage and for many years ran from Eden Quay. In 2012 it was moved to Pearse Street so it no longer crosses the River Liffey. To get to Tallaght it passes through Harold's Cross, Terenure and Templeogue and crosses the M50 at the Firhouse Road. Just after passing over the M50 it turns left and passes along Ballycullen Road, Drive and Avenue to rejoin Firhouse Road. Instead of followinhg route 75 into Tallaght along Old Bawn Road, it uses Kiltipper Road instead, passing Tallaght Stadium (home to Shamrock Rovers) before reaching The Square Shopping Centre in Tallaght.
The 49 was the second bus route to go over to GT operation in Ringsend after the 1. Initially it had one or two allocated which were the left-overs from the 1, but when the second tranche of GTs arrived in 2013 it became fully GT operated.
